On the same day as the Google Nexus Launch, Apple have announced that their app store has reached its 3 billionth download. The store reached 2 billion downloads in September and in the space of 4 months, has hit the 3 billion mark, 1 month faster than the same climb from 1 billion to 2 billion and twice as fast as the first 1billion downloads.

With over 100,000 developers, the app store has not only struck a note with iPhone users but also third party developers and companies, who are making the apps for the device and in some cases finding new income streams as well as new ways to communicate with their customers and distribute content.

Blackberry and Android devices also have online stores, but both have proved less popular with developers although the android marketplace is picking pace. With the 24th of January round the corner and a potential iPhone firmware upgrade, Apple could push the pace by enabling developers to tap into more functionality on both the iPhone 3G & 3GS?… stay tuned…
