WWDC Roundup: Summary of 2009 Apple Keynote

If you didnt get a chance to follow the WWDC ( Worldwide Developers Conference ) proceedings today, this is your chance. Sadly, Steve didn’t grace us with his presence and to be honest, nothing new was unveiled apart from many due updates to the iPhone and some very nice upgrades for the Macbook Pro family.

I’ve compiled a bullet summary of the proceedings at the latest WWDC Keynote. If you’d like to watch it live then visit the Apple Keynote page, otherwise read on for a recap.

Macbooks:

All Macbook Pros got an upgrade today, the most notable being the upgrades  in the 15inch Macbook Pro

  • 15inch Macbook Pro now has 7hr battery life, new brighter screen, 3.06 Dual Core CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 500GB 7200RPM HD Or alternatively, a 256GB SSD hard drive , are all new specs to expect in the 15inch Macbook.
  • 17inch Macbook Pro also gets some updates, 2.8GHz CPU and  500GB HD,
  • 13inch Macbook is now the 13inch Macbook Pro also with new screen , SD slot and longer battery life.

OSX

Apple previewed Snow Leopard at the WWDC keynote, highlighting many of it’s new features. From these features, Apple boasted a streamlined installation process as well as speed improvements for a number of applications including Mail, Safari 4 ( which was launched today on Mac and PC ), and Spotlight.  Support for Microsoft Exchange Server to Mail, iCal, and Address Book has now been built into snow leopard.

iPHONE

v3:

  • New Cut, Copy and Paste feature that works across all Apps.
  • New MMS on all networks.
  • New Search features, again works across the whole phone.
  • iTunes gets an update, You can now rent and purchase movies as well as  purchase TV shows, music, and audio books.
  • Tethering feature on supported networks. Allows you to share a data connection using your iPhone as a modem.
  • Auto fill for web browsing
  • New languages now include Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Korean and Thai.
  • “Find My iPhone” , available to mobile me customers as a service, it lets you track your iPhone and send messages to it over the net, displayed on a Google map, as well as the ability to wipe your phone wirelessly.
  • API improvements and new APIs, including  in-app purchases, Peer to Peer connectivity, and  support for hardware accessories that can interact with software on the iPhone.
  • Push notifications are now on the iPhone and include pop-up alerts, sounds, and App icon badges.

iPhone 3GS:

  • To launch on June 17th 2 days after V3 software is released.
  • Will come with V3 software and features mentioned above.
  • New 3MP camera with video capability and autofocus built in.
  • Faster, more powerful and longer battery life .
  • Hands free capability and voice Control.
