Facebook 1.5 for Blackberry: Whats new?

On Tuesday, RIM released version 1.5 of the Facebook App, something many had expected in January but has only just come to fruition.  At face value, the interface hasn’t changed much with most options and icons staying untouched, however the features have had  some major additions.

First thing to note is the Calender, contact and message tweaks that have been added. Your blackberry contacts (if you allow it ) are synchronized with your Facebook contacts, and things like profile pictures and numbers are shared between Facebook and your handheld device. With regards to contacts, once synced, the next time you log into Facebook, it will show a list of contacts it’s seen in your phonebook, but aren’t friends in your profile. Its does a (worryingly) very good job at ths, finding 71 friends in mine of which around 50 were genuine contacts I hadn’t yet added.

As for the Calendar side of things, you can now sync your events on Facebook with your calendar so that now when you say your attending, you actually have no excuse not to. Messages appearing in the application now appear marked with a Facebook icon in your general messages inbox for email. When you click to reply it takes you right back to Facebook with the reply window already opened.

Other welcomed additions are the ability to comment on status updates, the sideways scrolling transition between windows, a restyled friends list, and lastly the ability to send messages to multiple people, something long overdue. This update is still a long way away from the iPhone version though.

Facebook for Blackberry is available now from mobile.blackberry.com via your phone or from the recently launched Blackberry App World.
