Mouse Turns 40

The mouse turned 40 last week. Its birthday seemed to coincide with mine breaking… anyways, it made me think where would design be without a mouse. OK you have Wacom tablets and some pretty snazzy 3D trackballs , but you’ll find people using both, never just a Wacom tablet or just a 3d trackball, in fact the only instance i can think of that you may be excused from using a mouse is on your laptop where the touch pad is the alternative but even these test your patience at times.

Not only is a mouse irreplaceable, its functions for example clicking are almost habitual. Try navigating through www.dontclick.it/ without clicking, almost impossible. Closer to home try playing a 1st person shooter without a mouse and keyboard, OK you have the joysticks that come with consoles but these just don’t match the mouse for pace and accuracy.

So quite simply the mouse is one of the greatest inventions for the computer and hats off to Doug Engelbart for his work.

As for a personal recommendation, Logitech VX Nano or its big brother, the MX Revolution , not cheap mice but if your spending some serious time in front of the screen, definitely worth the investment.
